Francesca Sutera

Licensed Professional Counselor

Taking the first step to seek professional help is a brave and courageous one, but the process can often prove to be daunting, especially after the pandemic. I have been in the same position of combing through different listings and websites with the hope of finding a therapist either in-network with my insurance plan and/or offering a reasonable out-of-pocket rate -- as well as a good fit both style and modality wise for my concerns... and so I know personally how overwhelming all of the jargon, information and insurance FAQs can be. I hope that this website will serve as a useful tool in learning more about the therapeutic process as a whole, as well as finding a therapist who is right for you and your unique goals for treatment.

My name is Francesca (most people call me Fran) and I am a licensed professional counselor based in Philadelphia, PA. It's been my dream job since I was a kid -- and no, no one in my family really understood why I wanted to openly talk about feelings, which I'm sure is relatable for many. It's important to me to create a space where you can reflect on what you're bringing into therapy, how presenting concerns are showing up in your daily life, and collaborate on best and most sustainable ways to move forward. You are the expert on you, but it's my job to be strengths-based, curious, warm -- and use some humor -- to build a therapeutic relationship where you can feel free to explore your authentic wants and needs... and translate that into the real world outside of sessions.

What kind of therapy do you provide?

I provide individual therapy to adults and adolescents. I aim to be insight-oriented as well as solutions-focused. I believe that there's great value in exploring what got you to where you are today, and with that working knowledge, we can then collaborate to identify solutions that are most aligned with your life and values.

What are your areas of expertise?

I welcome and am comfortable working with general concerns, such as life transitions, work stress as well as anxiety and depression. I also specialize in working with trauma, post-traumatic stress, body image concerns and eating disorders.

Do you use any specific kind of treatment approaches in your work?

This is a very valid question, but often a difficult one to answer. Therapy looks and feels different for everyone. I tend to use a cognitive-behavioral treatment approach to address negative thinking and distressing behaviors (as well as explore and identify the link between the two), but also incorporate mindfulness-based strategies to combat anxiety in such a busy world, and narrative therapies to promote increased awareness of how different experiences impact us but don't necessarily have to define us. In short, the treatment approach may be different based on presenting concerns or what's happening in the room during a session -- while we don't have to spend time unpacking all of the jargon, you are always more than welcome to ask at any point what's being used and why!

Some other values that I hold and believe deeply influence my work and approach, such as:

  • Anti-diet

  • HAES-aligned

  • Trauma-informed

  • LGBTQIA+-allied
